ART CINEMA ALEKSANDAR LIFKA SUBOTICA


Aleksandar Lifka was born on – November 12th 1880. in Brassó in Austro – Hungarian Empire (nowadays Romania). He studied a technical school in Vienna where he experimented with magic lantern moving pictures unfortunately without success. At the end of his formal education he went to Paris where he bought a camera. Aleksandar and his older brother Karl started a travelling movie theatre showing their films to audience in Trieste ( Italy), Rijeka, Bjelovar, Osijek (Croatia), Ljubljana (Slovenia) , Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica ( Serbia). Lifka has renovated the grand hall of “Hungaria” Hotel into a permanent movie theatre founding a first permanent cinema in Subotica in 1911. Inspired by Lifka,s work, in 2005, local authorities in Subotica has founded a new cultural institution named Art cinema “ Aleksandar Lifka” dedicated to the endless inspiration hidden in the movie art.
